HORTUS CONCLUSUS

MON SCULPTURE GARDEN

VIENNA

THERE IS NO ENTITLEMENT TO ETERNITY.

ONLY THE LIMITLESS NOW.

MON sculpture garden Hortus Conclusus, Vienna September 2020

About the exhibition:

While all cultural institutes were forced to close their doors to the public due to the pandemic, the MON curatorial board explored alternative exhibition concepts such as the virtual edition Distant Bodies or the open air sculpture garden Hortus Conclusus in Vienna. Central aspects of the sculpture garden were the overcoming and the ongoing changes - reflecting the current global zeitgeist. The displayed positions were investigating the aspect of durability and the garden itself abandoned the claim to preserve the exhibits for all eternity. Instead, it initiated the much more fluid concept of change. A large number of works changed their original appearance throughout the exhibition due to weathering and changing seasons.

With its old flora and centuries-old trees the park was already inhabited by a sense of time inherent in classical sculptures. The added works of art followed the given natural dynamics and started a dialogue with them. The trees with their shapes, shadows and positions curated the site and delivered the frames and the plints for the artworks displayed.

Even after the opening of the park in September 2020, the garden continued to change itself and further positions were added – continuing to be an organic structure that, like nature itself, transforms with the ever changing seasons.
