EDITION #4

BALANCING THROUGH BREAKING BRIGHTNESS. CONCRETE DEPTHS

17.12 - 15.01.23

Inspired by the iconic parking lot at Cetinjska 15, the nexus of Belgrade's nightlife and urban culture, room69 collective built a virtual parking garage in the physical space of the Monolog gallery, as the central digital location of their installation.

By further merging the exhibition with Google maps, its runtime was extened indefinitely, making it available to observers at any given point of time in the future. No matter where you are, if you search for “Monolog gallery, Cetinjska 15, Belgrade” in Google maps, you will be able to view the exhibition and have complete control over the space and what you choose to observe in it – from the parking garage, as well as the sculptural elements in it.

room69 is an interdisciplinary art collective based in Vienna, developing progressive exhibition formats, new media arts and installations. The room69 collective consists of Hannah Neckel, Maximilian Prag, Josepha Erdbauer, Cristian Anutoiu, Lukas Dworschak, Brooklyn J. Pakathi and Roman Fleischmann.

To explore their new merging between virtual and physical space in the exhibition "Balancing through breaking brightness. Concrete depths" at the Monolog gallery, aside from the digital tour you can also drop by everyday from 5 to 9 PM until January 15th and see it in person.

SUPERSOBA
EDITION #5

YAO
WANG

Our 5th edition of SUPERSOBA will showcase the artworks of Yao Wang in our studio space at Cetinjska 15.

He is a Chinese visual artist currently based in Belgrade. After finishing his undergraduate degree in graphic design (Saint Petersburg, Russia) in 2019, he traveled to Belgrade in the beginning of 2020 as an artist in residence and eventually got stuck due to the pandemic. After 2 years of being in the limbo of not being able to travel back home, he found himself at ease of calling Belgrade a temporary base. His works are primarily installation and sculpture based, with a focus on identity and the intimate relationship between the artist and his surroundings. This is often explored through humour and social commentary.

His works will be on view on December 25th, the doors are open between 7 and 10 PM.

EDITION #1

BOJANA
TORLAK

We are kicking things off in September with a brand new concept of pop up events - Supersoba! The Edition #1: Primordial will showcase the works by the artist Bojana Torlak in our studio space at Cetinjska 15, and it will be open for viewing between 08.09 - 22.09.2022.

We aim to create a community driven space by giving the opportunity to the artists to completely take over the showroom and encouraging collaboration with other artists as well. This is why the showcase of Bojana's multimedia artworks will be accompanied with a performance by the alternative performance group Kabare Nebula.

Bojana defines her artistic practice as visualising the materiality of the "non - existent entities", and granting them somewhat of a double life in that process. By doing so, what is invisible to the naked eye obtains a body in a new, parallel dimension which exists in this time space reality, only in a different form. However much this process of materialization may be subjective, the feelings she is trying to grasp and transform are universal.

In the same vein, Primordial will showcase the artists conscious, logic based expricences, as well as her inner life which takes place on an intitive, spiritual, conscious and subconscious levels as a single energetic whole, by which she seeks to visualize this process of self - examination. The event will showcase what motivates the artist the most - her own truth, or better said the true emotion which is inseparable from art.

EDITION #2 SUZOVAČA

08.07 - 05.08.22

Dea Džanković made sure we skip the sophomore jitters with her solo exhibition Suzovača! She introduced the visitors to a collection of works that explore the public phenomenon of kafana - as one of the ultimate spaces of social interaction. After a month of tears, rakija, tarot and broken glasses galore, we hope all of us have reached a different perspective when it comes to seeing a kafana for what it truly is - a cultural institution.

SUZOVAČA

PRESENTING WORKS BY
DEA DŽANKOVIĆ

Art always is a medium of communication. Sometimes to express a concrete thought, vision or aspect,  sometimes to articulate an abstract or emotional universe beyond words.

And vice versa, art has always been influenced by communication. Arguments, discussions, criticism and new inspirations are one of the key origins for creating art. Often these places of communication turn into art themselves. Raphael's Fresco „The School of Athens“, Frans Hals „Shrovetide Revellers“ or Diego Velazquez „Luncheon“ among countless others depict different forms of verbal communication in different social settings from different times.

„Bodegones“, the depiction of everyday life situations, often located in kitchens, restaurants or bars, are highlighting these places of personal exchange.

Dea Džanković explores one setting of verbal interaction in particular. In her exhibition „Suzovača“ the Monolog Gallery is reflecting a Kafana, an important nucleus of social exchange in Serbia.

A Kafana is a place where one goes to let go, it is an environment of emotional outbursts, shouting, crying, physical confrontation, confessions, penance, and glass shattering galore.

And one of the key ingredients of this unique atmosphere is the Rakija. It is the oil that greases this unpredictable engine of emotions. “Suzovača” refers to the central artwork in the exhibition, a bottle of Rakija, based on tears. In this case, the tears of Dea Dzankovic. A salty metaphor of bottled emotions.

The title of the exhibition and its penultimate piece came about as a play on words, from typical names for rakija depending on the flavor, and suze (meaning tears) as its key ingredient. Moreover, it represents a specific formula that puts together tears and alcohol in a drinkable form.

EDITION #1: NAVIGATING AN ALL - INSCLUSIVE VERTIGO

After 4 weeks of “Navigating an all-inclusive vertigo” we have not arrived at a final destination, but were rather lucky to open further questions and reflect upon them. Gratitude goes to the creators Jelena Micić and Vera Klimentyeva for being our Odysseyesses who took us on their journey.

MONOLOG OPENING NIGHT

HOW DOES ART SPEAK?
AND WHAT DOES IT SAY?

MONOLOG contemporary sets off as the black box of the art world, registering vibrations, recording turbulences and anticipating ongoing and future trends.

Located in the epicenter of Belgrade's nightlife - the Cetinjska district - the gallery offers an open space in which contemporary themes are articulated and enables a creative pipeline between Belgrade and Berlin with the Museum of Now (MON) and Supermarket Lab as founders of the initiative.
