OLEK

MON *BERLIN EDITION 2019

Agata Oleksiak, Olek, (born 1978, Ruda Slaska, Poland) describes themselves as: “I am a two-spirit person; a child of the witches they did not burn; a failed art critic and a self-taught artist. All art is a self-portrait. Fear is a cockblocker of dreams. What is coming is better than what is gone. The best teacher is my last mistake. Appearances can be deceiving. Art is to the spirit what food is to the body and what sex is to the species. Art is what keeps spirit alive. I crochet moments so they will not die.”

For Olek, art and life are inseparable and this is re ected in their artwork, which is embellished with emotions, memories, experiences and insights. For 15 years the crochet hook has been the mouthpiece to create thoughts, dreams and wishes into a reality.

Through crocheting the artist creates sculptures, in which the body becomes readymade shell, where movements and possibilities are altered as the performer’s sexuality, personal identity and culture is redefined.
